Widescreen is the closest to the original cinema ratio as well as you also get all of the picture instead of the edges getting cut off.

I watch movies on a 16:9 projection screen and since most movies are filmed in Widescreen i definitely prefer Widescreen.Even if i am watching a 4:3 (full screen) movie i can re-size the image to Widescreen.
When you watch a Widescreen movie on a standard 4:3 television the image is smaller to fit the wider aspect ratio on the screen. Some people think that because there are black bars on the top and bottom of the screen they are not seeing all the picture, but they are seeing a smaller version of the complete Widescreen movie.
Sometimes when a widescreen movie is shown on a conventional 4:3 TV it is expanded top and bottom and left and right to fill the whole screen. When this happens you are missing nearly half the movie( depending on how wide it was)
Cheers.

Widescreen all the way. Fullscreen crops out the sides of the original film so you are actually seeing less of the movie.

I love this question. Widescreen is the prefered format because you get the benefit of the cinematic aspect ratio. However, 4:3 ratio will be more enjoyable to watch on a conventional television.
I would have to chose widescreen as my desired format, the filmakers work hard to give us their creative impression and transcription of a script. I think we should see all they have to show us. The 16:9 format will ultimately do that. You get very used to it after a while as well.

It depends. I prefer fullscreen, in the sense that the entire screen is occupied. For example: my TV has an aspect ratio of 4:3, I prefer a movie to fill the whole screen.
Then, my PC monitor has an AR of 8:5. I prefer a movie to fill that whole screen.

Widescreen of course!
Pan and Scan (fullscreen) drives me crazy...I hate it, hate it, hate it!
In fact, this past Christmas my Wife accidently got me a fullscreen copy of Batman Begins. I forgot to exchange it and there it sits. I still havn't even taken it out of the plastic.

Interesting, a question with no right answer... Wide-screen for movies, maintains the integrity of the film maker's "vision". For broadcast television I prefer the native aspect ratio to the programming. By that I mean, if the program is intended to be wide-screen (HDTV for example) then view it that way. The same holds true for 4:3 standard programming. I really don't like the "stretch" features that most wide-screen televisions use to fill out the picture. That said, I also realize that the manufacturers recommend that you do this to protect from burn in. It should only be a few more years until most if not all programming is in wide-screen format, thankfully!
