I always thought the OT Bible was despicably cruel. It portrayed God as hateful and malicious. The plague of locusts was one of the worst 'acts of God', but I can see how people must have wanted to find some way to justify such loss in their time. As for the story of Jesus himself, it's like there's no moral to the story - that human beings are cruel and God is even more so.

If you read the gospel accounts of the Passion, they are very terse: "They beat him," "They placed on his head a crown of thorns," "They led him out," "They crucified him." There's very little gory detail, no torn skin, nail pounding or agonized breathing. That all gets filled in by devout Christians who need to describe just HOW MUCH Jesus suffered in their place.
There seems to be something vicariously cathartic about such gruesome descriptions, as if describing them makes one a participant in the suffering. Or perhaps by describing such extremities, they hope to convince God that no personal punishment is needed. Certainly the mental images have been used to amplify a sense of guilt in the insufficiently repentant.
And yet, the gospel writers did not feel the need to sketch more than a bare outline of the events. They must have had other priorities.

I shouldn't dignify this question with a response, but have you ever looked around??? I think there are far worse things, and more of them, than the crucifixtion. It also sounds like you're saying that Christians are the only ones who commit these types of crimes or are mentally ill. That I assure you is false. It has nothing to do with religion. People do crazy stuff whether they are religious or not. Stop spreading your hatred.

Easy. The Christians started using the cross after Constantine unified the jesus movement. Originally Constantine used the cross as his symbol, as we can see the cross on his armies shields when he took over the roman empire by force. Although He was Polytheistic he used the Christian god as an excuse to rule.

Nonsense and puerile hogwash. We need to focus on the entire act of selfless love performed by our Saviour, Jesus Christ. This includes taking upon Himself all our sins whilst in the Garden, being scourged and mocked by the soldiers, taking part in an unlawful trial, bearing the burden of a heavy cross to His place of execution, being nailed thereto, and dying in great agony, before rising again on the third day.

Christians glorify Jesus' triumph, the ressurection, i.e. not being on the cross. I was not aware that overcoming adversity was bad to teach.
P.S. If you are thinking of The Passion, that was Mel Gibson's view, which I personally do not agree with.

Wowww.. there seem to be many frustrated atheists suffering from a dull, dismal and purposeless life. They feel the need to come on here and mock and blast Christians in order to validate their exsistence. I strongly suggest you get a life and do something meaningful with it because you look pretty stupid.

The mental illness around us today is caused mostly by bitterness, unforgiveness, anger, fear, anxiety and stress.
We have people fearing the thought of terrorists instead of trusting God. We have people forgetting God and believing Evolutionist's garbage. We have people believing cults and false doctrine of every kind so they can continue with their drugs, alchohol, pornography and promiscuous sex.
A curse, without a cause, does not come my disturbed friend.

We don't think of the negatives of Faith. God is real and his Glory is much better. I had nothing to do with the past. Scientifically show me how to change the past as you perceive the past. Do you know once science believed in letting of blood. Therefore all medical deaths are due to science.
