I know how powerful the need for vengence is but honestly its not worth it..` If you are angry about something now, wait and see how you feel in a few days. You will probably have calmed down a bit by then and realized that this person was not a friend and so there is no need to let them get under your skin.
Taking the high road and being the bigger person is so liberating and is so much more satisfying then getting back at someone.

By allowing them to continue to do so, uninterrupted. The fact that they feel it necessary to be critical of you says more about them than it does about you. Most people are aware of this, and sooner or later, your former friend will be made aware of it as well. If what they say about you is true, then other people are likely to be aware of it already, and this person will appear to be a petty, bitter person trying to cause trouble. If what they say about you is untrue, that also is likely to be known already, and they will be exposed as a liar.

Do nothing. Say nothing. Be patient. This person will serve themselves the bitter dish of revenge.
