my scottie is 12weeks old and one ear has been up upright for about 1 1/2 weeks but the other is still in the flopped down position. How long could it take to become upright? I want to show her but obviously couldn't if it stays like this.

Sylvia P has the right idea, even if someone gave her answer a 'thumbs down' vote! The same ear carriage problem occurs very often with Yorkies. The breed experts recommend a small piece of tape at the end of the ear to encourage the correct carriage position. Massaging the base of the ear (daily) also helps to strengthen the carriage. In the olden days, breeders (apparently) coated the ear with collodian in order to get it to the upright position.

All said and done, I suppose this is only important for the show ring in order to meet the breed standard. I am sure your Scottie's ears will both go up and I really do recommend the massage. As for the cottage cheese suggested, this is an excellent remedy for all-round well being! My vet swears by it and he's never wrong!!!

Good luck with your Scottie and may she be a real show stopper!

She's got plenty of time! Ears will go up & down a number of times & probably won't settle completely until after she's finished teething. If her parents' ears were OK, chances are her will be too.

I don't know about Scotties but if a Yorkies ears don't stay up we tape them and there is a site on the web about taping the ears. Just google it. I have also been told to put cottage cheese in their food to help strengthen the cartilage. Sylvia

You could try taping the ear that's not right to hold it in the right position. When I was a kid, that's what they did to try to help the sloppy ear develop the desired position.

She may just not have any cartilage in her ear and that's why it's not becoming upright.

If it does have cartilage it can take up to 6 months for it to become upright.

I am afraid the dog I had before my current dog had one ear up and one down all her life. A little child said the spring had gone in her ear!
