I want to add them to my stir fry, but I opened the bag (for the first time) and it smells a little weird and they are slimy. Should I use them?

No. Throw them out. They should be dry and crisp and smell fresh.

No you probably shouldn't if they are really "slimy." You should make sure, though, that they are not just a little wet from the condensation in the bag. I remember when I first washed bean sprouts, I thought they were slimy.

They could also be slimy because of a few bad stems. When you wash them, be sure to pick out the stems that look bruised, brown, and particularly slimy. These few ones could be the ones causing the smell and nasty texture. Sometimes, it's just the tips of the roots that are falling off; they tend to be a bit disheartening to touch or smell as well. Be sure to snap those nasty brown whiskers off.

You should be left behind with crisp, clean, white sprouts (after you take out the bad few, take off the particularly brown roots, and a few little green pods). I'm sure after you do this, you'll be a lot more confident, and your appetite will return. If you still think they smell gross, though, maybe you should buy a new batch...

Personally, I never liked bean sprouts. I hated being the kid that had to clean them before dinner. But good luck!

NO! Bean sprouts are a vegetable just like lettuce. They should look and feel fresh and vegetable-y. Just like lettuce, if they sit in a bag in the fridge too long they will start to decompose. Anything that is slimy or smells "off" must be thrown away. Sorry. Got any other fresh veggies in the fridge? You can throw them into your stir fry to replace the missing sprouts.

NO... Bean sprouts should have a smooth non slimey feel, kinda squeaky. The only veggie I know that is slimey is okra and that is only on the inside.

Nope, they're supposed to be crispy and smell fresh. Your bagged ones have been sitting too long and you need to toss them!
