I have a cat hes going to be 2 this july and we are moving to a new house in september how do I keep him from running a way.I was thinking of keeping him in the garage for a month or so and taking him out everyday to see where we are and taking him out for feedings in the back yard then letting him lose in the back yard (its fenced in) I have moved twice with him and each time I start with him inside then let him outside he always comes back and sleeps in his kitty bed on the porch. Do you think my idea will work, or anyone have any others?

It probably will. I know that what I do is to keep mine in the house for 2-3 weeks. Then let them out on supervised outings for only a few minutes the first day and then gradually more and more as days go by. I have one now that was strictly a house cat and now goes outdoors and really hates to come in but he is always nearby. I did have one cat, Hairball Harry McDoughal who got run off by a dog and was gone for 32 days. When he finally got back home, he was nearly dead from starvation. He now goes out all of the time and I am sure he still remembers as he never leaves the perimeters of my yard.LOL!! PS. I did use a leash and halter for awhile on the house cat that now goes outside.

well i had a cat and we moved to a new house a couple years ago. he actually hid in a shoe cabinet and jumped out when the movers got to the new house! i let him know where the food is and hiked with him and played outside with him a lot. He found his own way around and returned every day. Unfortunatlty he died last october:( but i would try that! good luck!

they will work fine and if your cat stars trying to break the fence, get a cat carrier. Then it will know this is itts new home and your not going anywhere(i mean in a good way like not leaving the cat.)

yes, also keep a regular feeding schedual. example. At 8p.m. open a can of wet food and give a small piece of it. That way it always comes back, and knows where to stay.

Your idea will work just fine, but it worked with 2 weeks for my cats. Besides, they tend to expand their territory graduately.

The best rule is to keep them strictly INSIDE at the new place for at least two weeks. Let him get totally used to the place before you even consider letting him outside.
