My ex from long ago rang me out of the blue to ask for a friend's (whom we both know) telephone number - It was a really awkward conversation - We split over five years ago - What is he really up to?

Don't get your hopes up too high, he probably really just wanted the number.
See what happens, see if he calls you again.
And remember, it is a reason that he is your ex.

There's a Chance that he does want you back, but before getting ahead of yourself, ask yourself if he's really worth it. Are you ready for a commitment if something should happen? But, you have to remember that there is the chance that he actually lost the phone number, and you were the only one he could think of calling... But, there's really no way to tell from one phone call, just wait a bit and see what happens.

Well, I don't know if it's good to show pictures of you and your boyfriend in front of him, I'll be mad if someone did that. But, maybe, yes, he is a little upset with you. The only thing is, who was the one that decided to break-up, or was it the both of you? Oh well, if he is trying to flirt with your friend, than he is obviously trying to make you jealous because of the pictures your friend wanted to show him. Anyways, if you like him enough, ask a friend of yours to tell him if he still likes you; since he talks to them a lot. Of course, he could deny that as well. Basically, most boys are very confusing. I wish you luck. :)

It depends. Maybe he just simply want the tel. number of that friend and you are the first one that pops in his mind. Anyway, just wait & see. Time will tell if what is he really up to now.

Well it depends.
Would he know the phone number?
and he could have called anybody else right?
He probably is developing feelings for you..
and wanted to hear your voice.

If that's all he asked about and there were no questions about you, then I'd say he just wanted the phone number.

let him call you for something else first.... if he does, he wants to talk (even if during conversation acts like he does not). He may have some questions for you because he wants to improve himself and feels you will be honest.

in making corrections he may want to have a relationship with you.

it is key that you not call him, let him call you if he wants

It seems to me you still want this boy to be in your life and now that this boy asked for your friends number your starting to question yourself with all sorts of things like Oh does he like her or is he trying to get to me with her. I suggest telling him you still like him or move on.
