A basset should not be bred before the age of 2. And you do realize, don't you, that this is a breed that very often requires C-sections because they can't whelp naturally. That's very expensive.

Also, your dog will need all her health checks before being bred. You also need to make sure that she's an excellent example of the breed and would better the breed if she produces puppies.

After she is
1. a minimum of 2 years old _and_
2. has had her hips X-rayed and the results sent off to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (www.offa.org) for certification of being hip dysplasia-free _and_
3. has had any other breed-specific testing done (if you don't know what types of genetic diseases come up in Basset Hounds, she should not be bred by you) _and_
4. has been objectively evaluated to say she's a fantastic basset hound physically and mentally _and_
5. been tested for brucellosis and other diseases that could cause her and/or the stud dog to become sterile _and_
6. you've evaluated your lifestyle to see if you have the time and money to raise a litter (you have to feed the mother extra-good food and more of it, the puppies will need to eat, vet bills, advertising, there will be little sleep for a while) _and_
7. you are prepared to be responsible for those puppies for life if their new owners cannot care for them at some time in the future or if you cannot find homes for them (bassets can have BIG litters).

You shouldnt breed a dog until they are at least 2 years old. Not to mention that you shouldnt breed at all, think of the poor dogs being put to sleep everyday in pounds because of back yard breeders. Please don't breed your dog, have her spayed instead!
