Mark 8:27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?
8:28 And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.
8:29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.
8:30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.

Why? This same story is repeated in Luke (9, 18-21) and Matthew (16, 13-20). Why was it so important that no one knew who he was?

Because the early Christians were lying, and needed a cover story for why no one seemed to remember this Jesus person that they were writing so many books about.

I think Jesus being a human and knowing who and what he was against; realized that he was going to meet an end like all of the other prophets that preceded him. They too were sent by God and came to change the hearts of people and were rejected as false. They were stoned or pushed off the end of a cliff.

Jesus as a true man, wanted to complete projects that were being revealed to him by his Father. Also, I don't think he was here for a popularity contest. He came to teach love and forgiveness and complete the Old Testament writings. I think he could see that he was the Christ described in scripture and death was going to happen because mankind would reject him as God and kill the weak man part of him. He was the creator of the Universe made man. (Remember he was truly man with human feelings and truly God.)

The same story is repeated in Luke and Matt because it is true fact and it is told they way it was. _

It is to protect them and not grow the crowd.

Jesus already had a huge following of people to witness the shows. Jesus had only a few that believed in Him.

Many say "show me a miracle and I'll believe" but that's not what would make people believe. Everyone saying that Jesus is God wouldn't make people believe. It is only by the work of the Holy Spirit that people are saved.

There was a specific time for Messiah to be revealed. It is tied up with the prophecy of the 70th Week of Daniel where on a specific day, Messiah was to ride in to Jerusalem.

This day was exactly fulfilled when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey as prophesied in Zechariah 9:9...
“Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘ Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

This is all explained in my study here...

hello. it was important because Jesus had more things to do to fulfill the scriptures. if he did not fulfill them and they killed him before that(and they would have killed him before that), then he could not have accomplished all he did after. he had to prove in his own way who he was. its a little tricky but with some study youll get it. ps. get a concordance. God bless

I'm not sure that, by that, he didn't want anyone to know who he was, he wanted to see what level of understanding people were on.

...because "His time had not yet come".

He had a specific plan and purpose for which to come and fulfill the Scriptures written about Him.

Had His "cover" been blown too early, so to speak, than they would have killed Him prematurely....

But as it was, it all occurred in perfect timing with the Jewish calendar and feasts, so as to show that He was the Jewish Messiah.

Because it wasn't time for His identity to be revealed .
Recall at the cross when it was said, Surely this is the Son of God." That is when it was to be revealed.<><
