Meditation and insight are not exclusive to the Buddhist tradition. It's only when they are coupled with the highest, higher training on wisdom that they become unique to the Buddhist tradition. The three highest, higher trainings of ethics, concentration and wisdom are the three. Concentration and wisdom taking as their object of observation the nature of reality would be concomitant to the development of calm abiding (shamatha) and insight (vipasyana). Engaging in any sort of study will definitely increase your knowledge, and then you will develop wisdom relative to what types of practice should be adopted and what types of behavior shoud be abandoned which will make you feel better about yourself and your actions and will help you along the way. Any of these topics are results of some kind of effects. The absolute best source for more information would be a Mahayana Spiritual Friend, or Lama - preferably an ordained monk or nun.

I've looked at meditation and Buddhism for over thirty yr. /done 7 ten day retreats(which isn't generally enough to have any real insight, usually takes yrs of daily practice)/ i wish i would have run across the technique from site below a long time ago because i think it is an easy way to develop mindfulness so you could have true insight. /it has Buddhist terms but glossary in back translates. i downloaded all the articles and took a fine point pen and wrote definitions over Buddhist terms ,so, anyone could read and understand it. if you find it interesting, download and translate. good luck

Its interesting that if you read a text (in my case a bible passage) a number of times on different days, new meanings come out. I've come across reliable teaching that suggests you've got to read a bible passage (from the start of a particular issue to its end) over 30 times to really fully understand it.
It does seem to work - e.g. I'm beginning to understanding Romans 6-8 which I always found tough to understand the concepts.
If you are a christian and believe the Holy Spirit has been sent to guide you in all the truth as it says in John's gospel and other texts, you can ask Him about issues you have trouble comprehending.
If you are a christian you can receive the gift of praying in tongues quite easily, and this can help as when you do it the Holy Spirit is praying with your authority to help you understand things beyond your mind's current comprehension.

I get excellent results practicing prayer and understanding. I pray while examining a question or problem and I am guided by the Holy Spirit towards understanding. You really have to practice this for yourself, start perhaps by researching in the 'second' Testament.

How about this? I got f-d up on mushrooms and REALIZED things I already knew. I would have argued that I realized I was on a big rock hurtling through space, and that I myself was a leather bag full of water and calcium sticks before this experience, but I would have been wrong.

You meditate on what your teacher, or guide, teaches you to study analytically (when doing analytical meditation) and you come to conclusions on your own. Knowledge changes people. It's as simple as that.
