has anyone on y!answers ever convinced you that you were wrong about your religious or philosophical beliefs? it pretty much never happens so why do we put so much an effort to debate this stuff when everyone walks out with the same opinion?

I can't say I've completely changed my mind on any major doctrinal issues, but I've sure learned a lot. I've walked away with many new points to consider, and concepts to do further research on. Some people here have helped me open my mind to opposing points of view, and in general, have taught me a great deal about different faiths (as well as a few fascinating things about my own belief system).

Honestly, I do it for a couple main reasons. When I first came to Y!A it was so I could get information to help my selling on eBay and for general info, the best way to get points to ask Qs is to answer As, the quickest way to rack up points is to answer on what you know. So I answer on, among other things, my beliefs. An added benefit is my typing skills have vastly improved, and I feel I have gotten better at communicating my ideas through writting. Plus there is the all too very RARE instance of someone asking a Q and actually wanting an answer, and actually seeming to learn something.

That said, it does seem that things on Y!A have gotten allot tenser in the R and S section.

I think you are wrong, the debates here has changed many of my perspectives and I believe others have benefits as well. At lease it has brought a better understand toward others and their beliefs.

Not on my religious beliefs, but on my conduct. When I first got on here I was always offended and tried to bite back whenever someone bashed my beliefs. Now, unless I have something meaningful to say in a respectful way, I don't say anything at all. I think that's a pretty good transformation! Thanks everyone!

They don't. Do you know Music Girl? She went from Christian to Atheist directly because of Yahoo Answers.

I have had my mind changed for the better and the worse about many belief systems due to this forum.

I am as yet unsure if there's something wrong with the mind I have... I'm still analytically examining it. To date I still find it empty of inherent existence and changing, therefore I feel no need to change it, just my incorrect view on various issues like my lack of patience with unkind people who use religion as a hate weapon... (sigh).

Debate rarely changes an opponent's mind but it can change the minds of the audience.

Would you expect anyone admitting of being wrong and having changed they believes? so we will probably never know. But reality of existence has a way of bringing light to the blinds.

I know of people that changed their minds because of it. Not the ones posting, but the ones that email on the side.
