I've been running 30-40 mins a day 6 days a week for four weeks now and cutting calories. Do you think that using Slim Fast shakes could help the cause? Or are they more a gimmick?

No, they have a nutritional value that is decent and is low in calories. To loose 1 pound you need to reduce your diet by 500 calories per day. With all that exercise you should be loosing and toning as well. So, if you've plateaued then this might give it a push. My Dr. said it was fine but he also said so was a bowl of Progresso Soup (a few less calories to boot).

Good luck

While it won't hurt for 1 meal a day, you are very active and work out so if you don't put enough nutrition in your body then the body starts feeding off fat and then eventually muscle. You will also begin to retain more water wt than usual.

While Slim Fast has worked for many, in my opinion it will never substitute a good/healthy meal. Instead of using the slim fast why don't you make 1 meal nothing but fruit and veggies (such as lunch time) there is nothing wrong with eating a 1/2 cup of fruit and maybe yogurt (if you like it). You would actually have to compare what you normally eat in the meal your wanting to substitute to the calories in Slim Fast. If you are a runner, then I'm sure you take vitamins. If it's the protein your looking for then you can get that out of peanut butter (carb friendly...I think it's peter pan that makes it) and celery sticks. You have many options to cut calories with out sacrificing the nutrition your body needs to keep up with you.

Good luck!

For an athletic person like you, Slim Fast is the same as taking a protein shake from a Freshens or any other shake/health place because they're liquid meals. Slim Fast may be cheaper/more expensive so check the prices before you purchase Slim Fast.

Forget protein shakes as you will never build any muscle on 600-800 calories per day, so they're a complete waste of money. If you want to lose weight, then just focus on doing that - forget about building muscle. You may be able to tone a little bit, but no more than that. When you are at your desired weight you can look into increasing your calories and taking up weight training to build muscle. Then you will need to eat a lot more protein, in which case the protein supplements will be more useful.

Please believe me that Slim Fast is NOT a gimmick, but it is good nutrition.
The reason I say this is because a few years ago I had throat cancer and I could not even swallow my own saliva because the pain was too great.
I had a feeding tube inserted so I could feed myself SOMETHING, and that something was liquid nutrition-- Slim Fast was among the brands of liquid nutrition that I used to stay alive.
I had the feeding tube for MANY months before I could eat normally again.
So I am a big fan of Slim Fast !! I am also a big fan of Boost and of Whey Protein shakes.

replacing one meal a day may help you but they are designed to replace two meals per day. the slimfast ones are okay but the shapeworks ones came out top in the independant survey carried out last year on dietary supplements. I would recommend you try the shapeworks as they are higher in nutrients and you also get free support and advice for your whole diet plan. try www.myhealthabc.net and you can get advice from the nutritional coach's who work there. I used these guys to improve my weight loss and lost over 36 pounds in five months after stalling at the same weight for ages. I hope this helps. By the way some of the answers above are way off the mark and ridiculous. good luck

I drink them for breakfast and it really helps boost my metabolism. They are about 200 calories, so they keep me full until it is time for lunch. I don't think they really can keep anyone full as a lunch or dinner replacement, but I do think they help as a breakfast replacement.

If you could honestly eat one of those for a meal and feel full, more power to you. It didn't work for me and I just wound up pigging out later.

they're good and work fine. they're better for a temporary solution. I drank them and lost weight, but now I just try to eat right.

there is no harm in drinking them, as long as you continue to eat healthy for the other meals. i used them to lose my baby wight, and it helped a great deal. it helped to curb my appetite a little, so i munched less.
