A flash by Canon. From the 220EX at the low end ($115) to the mid grade 430EX and 550EX, to the professional level 580EX ($390).

That depends what best means. Do you need a powerful flash or just something more powerful than the built-in flash? The 220EX has slightly more power, but it does not have that many options (such as the ability to turn the flash head to bounce light off the ceiling/wall). But if you need to travel, the 220 is compact and can fit in your pocket. Only buy this if size is an issue. I have the Speedlite 430EX on my 30D and it works for my needs. It lights up a large group pretty good. The 580EX has a lot more power, but it's also larger as someone else mentioned. Choose this flash if you will be doing ceiling bounces or will be using some kind of diffuser. So if size and price is not an issue, go for the 580EX.

The 430EX is the most balence on the XTi. I tried the 580EX but it was way too big and did not feel right. Once you upgrade your camera (if you ever do) you can always purchase a larger flash unit.
