I was born in 1950 and both of my parents have Alzheimer's. I am afraid that I will get it as I grow in age. Is there any literature out there that may help me with this topic?

No, you can't prevent alzheimer's. There are excellent drugs nowadays, however, that can minimize the effects of alzheimer's. And since you are a baby boomer, you may well be part of a generation who actually benefits from a cure. There are several mouse studies where drugs have reversed the effects of 'induced' alzheimer's so that, at least, is encouraging.

Walking on cobbles or an uneven surface has been shown to activate a part of the brain that is little used and help stave it off.

Doing crosswords, puzzles, having lively discussions and generally making sure you use your brain and reasoning powers is seen as the best defence.

All 4 of my grandparents have alzheimers and I'm at major risk. What really helps is get a Nintendo DS and get BRAIN AGE.
Its a great video game that will help keep your brain stimulated and will help keep your brain young.
If you can't do this try and do sudoku and other crosswords!

FYI:
The only way to diagnose Alzheimer's is if they test your brain after you die. So far it's been pretty hard for doctors to figure out how to "prevent" getting the disease.

not as far as i know..the best thing to do is mind exercises, suduku, word searches, memory games, reading, anything to keep your mind active, all this will help maintain synapse (nerve) connections, the less they are used the more they are likely to die off
