Hi,my hair is quite long as well. Personally, I take good care of my hair and getting a perm was no problem at all for me. I am blessed because my ancesters are Native American and Irish. I have thick, full hair that is strong and wild. A slight curl naturally-I enhance this with a perm every couple of years with a apple pectin perm on grey and white rods-grey mostly in the back of the head and the white near the face for a softer gentler curl. A good conditioner after perming my hair is the basic Nioxin line sold in beauty stores. Nioxin was formulated to support people getting chemotherapy treatments in Europe (acc to my mother a beautician.). Daily I use the TRESemme line used by professionals. I also use the Curls Rock line for a lightweight gel that smells like heaven and feels like silk. Before I use that though I like to use the Infusium 23 leave in conditioner. It works wonderful people compliment me all the time on my hair and its embarassing (?) at times when they actually Touch my hair without asking. U know?

I've had perms for years and your hair won't fall out unless the perm is done very badly. Your best option is to find a salon (and stylist) that gives perms often so you know that they know what they're doing.

To be safe, bring your concerns up with the stylist before you get the perm. It's likely he/she will suggest you get your hair trimmed before and after the perm to reduce the amount of damaged hair (you shouldn't lose more than 1-2 inches).

So, yes, go for it!

I wouldn't get a perm and you're about to go on vacation. If you want the curly look over your vacation, just apply gel and curl products to keep the style up so you don't have to do it often. Getting a perm and then swimming or other activities could break your hair off if you don't take the proper care of it since you're away and your hair care won't be the number one priority on your list. Save the perm idea until you get back.

I went to a really good hair dresser recently (people will drive several hours to have her do their hair) and I asked her to give me a perm. She told me she doesnt' do perms anymore because they are so hard on ppl's hair, she hates to see it done. I've never had a perm and that was the first time I've considered it. Every person who cuts my hair knows I've never had one because my hair is so healthy. So perming can definitely cause damage and sometimes permanent damage, as my mother can testify.

It sounds like you like your hair and the length that it is, so just choose carefully. Talk to somebody you know with a perm and go to their hairdresser... many hair dressers don't specialize in that and they will mess up!

I don't think that a perm will ruin your hair, otherwise people wouldn't pay for it, it defiantly won't fall out thats nonsense. Why not get a light perm or a wave to start with, I'm sure it will look lovely. xx

I think you should do what is best for you. If you know you are a responsible person you can do it. if you not responsible don't do it. I perm my hair every 3 months and I have a beautiful long hair. My hair is healthy, shinny and with volume. If you take care of your hair is no going to get damaged. A good way of taking care of your hair is using treatments a least twice a week and avoiding hot iron in your hair.

Ok so I got one in the 6th grade and my hair has not been the same since and now I'm in the 12th grade. Only some people can pull them off ! But if you want to get one go right ahead, if you want to have curly hair for a very long time ! on the other hand some people cant always curl there hair that much they just stay straight so good luck !

I understand why you want a perm hair goes frizzy in hot climates, even if you straighten it it will go kinky after 5 minutes. Why not try scrunching your hair with a leave in conditioner and see what you can do with your nataural locks. If not get some BIG soft curls put in rather than the eighties tight ones.

the chemical they use in perms is verry drying to the hair. if you hair is healthy, i suggest you DONT perm it. there are many alternatives to gettin wavy/curly hair with out gettin a perm, anyways curly hair is so much maintenance! you have to worry about frizz and product, your hair being dry is just going to become another problem.
