Do you think this is in the near future? Will it happen in our lifetimes? How do you think it will happen?

No. The end of the world will not be in our lifetime. It will happen about 5 billion years from now when the sun expands into a red giant and engulfs the inner planets. Until then civilizations will rise and fall, wars will break out, and earthquakes and natural disasters will occur in various places as always.

All the "prophecies" found in the Bible, the Koran, and various myths regarding the end of the world are simply metaphors and symbols designed to force people to end their wicked ways. The Biblical prophets especially used prophecies as a way to comment on the social injustices they saw in their societies and force social change. They would promise destruction and wrath if the people refused to repent and heavenly rewards if they did repent. The same is true of the prophecies found in the Koran, the works of Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce, and Mayan mythology.

As the teacher said in Ecclesiastes: the Earth abideth forever.

The fact that there is strife within and among the churches MAY be one of the signs of the end times.

The folks at Family Radio believe the Final Judgment and Second Coming of Christ will be in the fall of 2011.

For example see the book “Time Has an End” on line at:
http://www.timehasanend.org/public/en_time_has_an_end_cont.html

This group, whose primary teacher is one Harold Camping, also believes the Church Age has ended in 1988 and believers are to come out of the churches as they are now under the control of malevolent forces now that the Tribulation has begun. According to this group, this is why there is so much strife between and within church groups. Mr. Camping’s interpretations of the bible are highly allegorical, so let the reader beware.

See the book Time Has an End, Ch. 10:
http://www.timehasanend.org/public/en_time_has_an_end_ch10.html

That said, the online audio lectures at Family Radio, are illuminating and worth a listen:
See: http://worldwide.familyradio.org/zusa/english/connect/audio_archive/echoes/frame/download/download.html

Finally, for the offline version of the Family Radio nightly call in show, where folks ask questions about the bible to Mr. Camping, see:
http://worldwide.familyradio.org/zusa/english/connect/audio_archive/forum/frame/

I am not endorsing Family Radio’s doctrines, but one is able to learn quite a bit by listening to these materials.

Most of what you will read about the end times are pre-millennial views: the view that Christ's return will usher in a future millennium of Messianic rule mentioned in the book of Revelation before the final judgment. The believers of this doctrine also hold to the notion of a Rapture of the righteous beforehand.

Others hold that there will be only one second coming of Christ, at the time of the Final Judgment.

Then there are mixtures involving the views of the seven year tribulation and whether it is happening now, occurs later, etc.

These doctrines all fall under the general heading known as the study of end times, or eschatology.

For explanations of the various eschatological beliefs see: http://www.religioustolerance.org/millenni.htm

I am a Amillennialist. I believe we are currently living in the Millennium and in the Tribulation period. Events described in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 and in most of the book of Revelation have already happened. To me the Antichrist is figurative and not a real person. I believe that the Kingdom of God is today present in the world through the presence of the heavenly reign of Christ, the Bible, the Holy Spirit and Christianity. Both good and evil continues in the world until the current Church Age ends suddenly when Christ returns to the sky above the earth. Then the Rapture immediately occurs. The Redeemed are transported to heaven where they will adopt spiritual bodies. The rest of humanity will be condemned at this time to eternal punishment. The world will be abandoned. History is no more.

Problem is many take what is to come as a dooms day or Armageddon or end of days. This is a misunderstanding of words. Revelation, the word, does not mean these items. But means to bring about change, revealing the unknown.

Others take the Mayan calendar and date as a dooms day, end of times item as well. But again, no where does it state end of time, it also states, great change, nothing more.

Then get into Native Indian prophecy's and they are the same, no dooms day, just great change.

Do I believe a great change is coming? Yes. How do I know this? My gut for one, 38 yrs of living on this planet and seeing all I see, my logical educated brain can easily piece the puzzle together and realize the path the world is on. Plus I have been shown and told, a select few of us are out there. Some get stronger messages than others. Mine was simply a message of where to be soon.

Just know more birth pains are coming this year. And they won't be easy to ride out.

About 10 years ago, I thought it would be any day. BUT, now, I have no idea and I agree with one of your answers so far, that I think , things will get far, far much worse in society and environment before the book of Revelations gets into FULL swing. Revelations may have started a little bit, but we are not yet seeing 100LB hail stones.

No. What a very silly idea - someone's spreading FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.) The world ends with:
- The sun going red-giant, in ~4.8 billion years.

Even a major meteor or WWIII/WMD won't end the world... Maybe humanity will be toast, but the world won't end. Evolution will continue with whatever's left.
And of course, one cannot affix dates to either of these.

The end is fluid, we do not know a date or time or hour. Read Matthew the 24th chapter and Jesus left some signs for us to be on the watch for.

No one can say that. If you see or hear unusual things it will happen. Jesus will come to save all who believed in him and throw the anti-christ and his followers into fire. I am not afraid of rapture or stupid satan and his priests because i believe in god.
''Yahwey is my light and my salvation, Whom shall i fear?
Yahwey is the strenght of my life,
of who shall i be afraid?
Read the rest..... Psalm 27
