Sin is described in the Bible as transgression of the law of God (1 John 3:4) and rebellion against God (Deuteronomy 9:7; Joshua 1:18). Sin had its beginning with Lucifer, the “shining star, the son of the morning,” the most beautiful and powerful of the angels. Not content to be all this, he desired to be the most high God and that was his downfall and the beginning of sin (Isaiah 14:12-15). Renamed Satan, he brought sin to the human race in the Garden of Eden, where he tempted Adam and Eve with the same enticement, “you shall be like God.” Genesis 3 describes their rebellion against God and against His commandments. Since that time, sin has been passed down through all the generations of mankind and we, Adam’s descendants, have inherited sin from him. Romans 5:12 tells us that through Adam, sin entered the world and so death was passed on to all men because “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

For me, sin is something which I do and feel guilty about. Like for eg. if someone brings a food item and tells me to taste it, I taste it and dont like it but I still tell her a lie and say its good I liked it, then I dont think that I committed a sin (even though according to the bible, telling lies is a sin). Some might argue that I should be frank and tell that 'someone' the truth but I dont like hurting others this way. So I would prefer to lie and say that the food was good. I dont feel guilty about lying to that person.
But if I do something and know in my heart its wrong (I know its wrong cause I start feeling guilty), then its a sin.

Sin is everything we are and everything we do, apart from Jesus, because we were all born with the sin nature which was inherited from Adam. Sin is rebellion against God.

When Jesus died on the cross, He became our sin.

In 2 Corinthians 5:21, Paul tells us, "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

When we accept Jesus Christ, as our Lord and Savior, He becomes our sin, nailed to the cross. Upon His death, He has given all mankind the opportunity to accept the free gift of His sacrifice for us, which declares those who have accepted Him, forgiven and blameless.

"Transgress" literally means across or beyond a boundary, stage or degree. There is an indication in scripture that there are trangressions for Christians (failing to acknowledge or thank God) and transgressions for non-Christians (breaking the secular law which has been decided on by the populace over a period of time for monitoring speed, growth, reporting etc. so as to ensure the smooth running of society as an "engine"). For Christians, obedience to the secular laws should come naturally because they are roughly similar to the Ten Commandments, which are not binding on Christians but the principle is there. To the extent that secular law, as I said, is concerned, not primarily with punishing people, but with monitoring growth and the degree to which people are permitted to advance speedily, it is the way by which God permits non-Christians to govern themselves in a universe of love and free will. The governments are set in place by God to inspire fear in those who do wrong against the secular law.

I suppose that sin, being a scriptural term, refers particularly to transgressing against God, which would be any act that fails to acknowledge his teaching and the requirement to share all good things with him.

A transgression against the laws of God.

"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." (1 John 3:4)

It is the teaching of the church that Sin is seperation from God, self and others. Anything that seperates you from God, self or others is sin. It is more than just a list. The reason Jesus was without sin is that He was never seperated from God, except for those few minutes on the cross.

1John 3:4 "Sin is the transgression of the law(Torah)".

Romans 3:20 "....for by the law(Torah) is the knowledge of sin".

You will never see any mainstream "Christian" churches admit that simple fact!

(Gotta love some of the answers here! I guess Charlie Manson was just having a "moral failure" and Jesus was "sinning" when He condemned the Pharisees! :) )

A sin is anything that is bad for your body, your mind and/or your soul.

For instance, having a glass of wine with dinner can help with your digestion, relaxes you, gets the blood flowing and is enjoyable.

Drinking an entire bottle of wine will make you sick to your stomach, damage your liver and cause you to be a fool in front of your friends. So it is a sin to overdrink.

Sin is defined as an offense to a deity.

As there are no deities to offend, sinning is impossible.

Moral failures, on the otherhand, are perfectly possible.
