Don't pay him any mind. He might be bitter towards certain Americans as certain Americans might be treating him badly. If anything you should ask him why he said what he said. Who knows he might have even been joking. Believe it or not sometimes people joke around like that. I had this one Iranian professor who liked to kid around and call us his students that is that we were lazy Americans. But he always would say that he was kidding and that he knew that not everybody who is American is lazy.

So, you would beat him for having an opinion. Many people are glad that they aren't Americans.
I am studying abroad and I have heard the worst ever about us *I'm an American*

Don't you know that we are fat, lazy, stupid, we don't care about environment, we all support Bush and so on.
My friend from China asked me if all the women in the States are like the women in Sex and the City.
They judge us from our movies.

So, instead of beating him up then why don't you try to explain that not all Americans are stupid, dumb...

Edit:
It's weird how we Americans can say, "Oh, I'm glad that I'm not *fill in the blank* Let somebody say, I'm glad that I'm not an American then he's the enemy and should be beaten up.

I have an old 1950's cartoon
Its theme:
"How awful it is to have Americans on your side... but then how awful it would be NOT to have Americans on your side."

I must admit in the forced change of nationality game, I'd pick Canada and a few others before I'd opt to be an American.

No, you shouldn't beat him up. Teach him the phrase the rest of us use "Only in California..."
(or state of your choice)

Ummm.....no. I mean, looking at some ammericans, I probably agree with him. Of course, don't get me wrong, a lot of ammericans are good. There have been many great scientific breakthoughs in ammerica which would be one thing I admire. But when it comes to most things, they just wouldn't exactly rank high as the best race.

Sometimes I'm ashamed to be an American. But I admit I would think about punching him for a split second before realizing he probably has good reason to think that.

No. You'll just perpetuate the stereotype that Americana's are oafs and bully's who solve everything with violence.
