It's dealt with in many religions, especially in Asia and Africa. There just isn't a popular series of movies about Shamanism and Vodou, I guess.

But it's really due to the power of suggestion. The gospel accounts of "demon possession" occurred in places with heavy Gentile influence (Galilee, Samaria, etc.), where pagan beliefs like this would have been more prevelant than in, say, Jerusalem (King Saul was the only person in the Old Testament to be moved by an "evil spirit" - but even that was said to have been "from the Lord" and not "Beelzebub, the prince of demons"). Many modern Christians believe that Christ knew he was really healing disorders now diagnosed as (possibly) autism (the deaf/mute boy) or schizophrenia or trichinosis ("Legion", who lived near pigs), etc. but didn't really have the time to explain this to every nut that approached him as it wasn't the point - the point was that he had power over these false deities, just as God had power over the false gods of Egypt as shown by the plagues (their frog god, the god of the Nile, the sun god, etc.). As far as the afflicted "knowing" who Jesus was, he was well known, attracted a large crowd, and his reputation preceded him, but not everyone was crazy enough to say the rumors out loud - except for the crazies.

What news are you listening to? I never hear of possessions.

However Catholics have been casting out demons ever since Jesus and the Apostles did it.

Modern psychology says that most of the people who had demons cast out of them were probably miraculously cured from schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. But their cures were still miracles.

The Catholic Church believes that real demonic possessions are rare but possible, so they keep a few exorcists around just in case.

With love in Christ.

Ha Ha Ha. I think that catholics just really believe in demon possession and that the Vatican along with the Roman church perform a lot of exorcisms. It's not just catholics that are possesed by demons. You cannot be possesed by a demon if you are a true follower of Christ.

I believe that the only we can be possessed is if we LET that spirit in. There has to be a spiritual rift for them to get into.

That being said, a lot of possession now is really what they have found to be mental illness. I do believe in possession, but not like they portray in movies and things. I do believe in evil, and that there are evil presences, but I also believe we have the ability to keep them away from us.

I don't think it's only Catholics that believe this, there are other religions out there that do, and most even have their own form of exorcism.

I have witnessed an evil presence, and it isn't fun, but knowing how to make them go away is all you need to stop them.

They are probably the only religion that really believes in possession. Everyone else knows the truth is mental illness, not demon possession.
