Area 51 is the site for developement of new flight technology. It is where the sr-71 the b2 and the nighthawk were developed. Every major "alien/ufo" sighting actaully coincides with the development dates of specific craft. All of the "sightings" that came from what you might consider reliable eyewitnesses described craft from a distance that we are very familiar with now. Imagine how the sr-71 must have looked like back in 1964. More to the point imagine a flying wing craft like the b2, almost certain from a distance to be thought of as a flying saucer. The site is still in use and the big buzz at the moment is that they are working on a scramjet, hypersonic craft. (not to be confused with the nasa scramjet project that is well known). Not to mention from a point of logical deduction, had our country captured aliens. The technology these aliens must have possessed to have gotten them here would not have likely had them get captured or crash. More to the point it would be so far advanced from ours that the military would be pumping out items a lot higher tech then the blackbird. At our most advanced right now long distance space travel is not only impractical but impossible. If we had alien crafts and had learned anything from them, we would probably have free power, no pollution, and an entirely automated workforce hehe. but it makes for great stories huh?

I believe all it is really is what you mentioned - operational and analytical base of operations for the study of enemy aircraft and weapon systmes as well as the R&D facility for new aircraft.
I don't think that there are any UFOs there or any aliens. However, I do believe they are testing new propulsion systems (perhaps something learned from alien craft).

They actually have a casino there. They fly all the high rollers in and out everyday. Thats what all those white unmarked boeing 737's are that fly out of McCarran international airport everyday. Ive been there, its great. There is a bar there called E.T. , all beer is half price after 5. And they have a half price alien menu for kids, its fabulous!!!!

Area 51 is a fake, a ruse, a dummy to keep us from finding out the truth.
The real alien stuff is at Area 52.

That's where the government has their sleep-overs.
Dude, Area 51 is a top-secret research facility. Top-secret means we don't know what is going on there. If anybody does know, it means they can't tell you because that is a security breach and they will go to jail for a long time.

It is in fact a testing ground for captured military equipment, as well as a testing ground for new technology. As far as aliens are concerned, I imagine there are a few Mexicans there.
