This may not answer your question but its a true story.
One night I found in my garden a prowler so I gave him a good kicking for being on my land, turns out he was the local copper looking for a prowler because someone had reported one in the area. I got took to the station, questioned and charged. I did some ''private'' investigations about the reported prowler in the area and who had reported it, turns out no one had, so I asked the police to proove someone had, they refused point blank to help so I got a court order to make them proove it, guess what the report had gone ''missing'' but they still insisted they were right. Eventualy I went to court with a bloody expencive brief, after 2 days the police admited there had been no report of a prowler at all and they and the copper I thrashed were lieing through the teeth and the case was thrown out by the judge. I ended up with a huge bill to pay the brief so on his advice I claimed off them and guess what? I was offered a vast sum of money from them not to go to court, if I did the lieing sods would have got away with it so I took it to court and won the day, not as much money as I was offered out of court but justice was done, the cop I thrashed was kicked out of the force for falsifieng parerwork as was one in the station, 2 others got a severe bollocking and the top man of the local forse had to write a personal appolagy to me. Needless to say I never ever got bothered by them again.

It depends what the charge is.If the charge is assault police than this is a hybrid offence and can be tried by the magistrates court max 6 months prison if the prosecution take it to the crown court then 5 years. The offence actually charged is often and assault under the offences against the persons act which carry prison sentences bet 5 - 10 years.Violently resisting arrest is an indictable offence rarely charged but can get you 5 years.

At the time it's normally "falling down the stairs" at the police station, as for court it depends on what injuries the PC sustained. Normally at least 6 months inside.

Havent they been charged as yet?I should imagine it will be something quite harsh.
At the end of the day the police are just doing their job,so to resist arrest will I should imagine only add to whatever they were being arrested for.

As much as possible hopefully but in this country unfortunately not enough.

We do a hard enough job as it is without being verbally and physically assaulted by idiots like the one you're referring to.

Would your family member appreciate being assaulted when they were at work just doing their job? Probably not.

No matter where, assaulting police is considered by the courts a form of anarchy. A person who attacks the police is considered a danger to the general public. If you assault a police officer than the courts feel no one is safe.
Hope it was worth your while. I'll e-mail you with my license plate order.

The penalties depend on the state it occured in. In California, the maximum for assault would be a $2,000 fine and/or one year in jail. Resisting arrest is punishable by up to $1,000 and/or one year in jail.
