You'll want to turn off the eye candy as much as you can and have a plain interface, avoid GNOME and KDE and use something like XFCE or even just a straight window manager (I used fvwm on a Cel 466 / 64 MiB and had that work rather well).

Gentoo tends to be the fastest because it is compiled for your hardware (provided you set it up right) but it is harder to set up than the others and compiling stuff takes a long time (even a Core 2 Duo can leave me waiting) so you'll be waiting a while for the installation to complete.

Aside from takes forever to compile source based distros there really won't be any real difference between them so just pick one and remove the stuff that takes a lot of resources (i.e. don't use GNOME or KDE and try to get programs that are less demanding on your system).

Getting an older version might also be a good idea because that'll have been tested with an older computer than what current distros get tested with.

Though I'm not sure what very fast is from your point of view.

Fast at what??? If you have a slow laptop then you need to get a better laptop. Installing LINUX will not make you have a faster laptop! Besides what will you be using Linux for? You are probably one of those GUI guys that knows not of console and real Linux, so in short stay away before you hurt yourself, or run a linux desktop such as Seamonkey, Linspire or Ubuntu
