Check for corns or damage to his paw.
Where is it tender for him? Is it an injury, what did vet diagnose?
If its muscular.....give him a nice massage. My dogs love it.
My greyhound drools when i massage his shoulders. It wont do your dog any harm anyway.
Hope hes better soon.
Failing that get a firm diagnosis from vet ..............

Depending on what your vet told you, you may want to take him back. It sounds like he could have hip dysplasia, which is common in older dogs. It's basically arthritis.

For every day, you can get by with an ibuprofen - check with your vet about the dosage. It's cheaper, and will work just as well. For the really bad days, save the prescription pills.

Just general maintenance, make sure he has something soft and warm to sleep on, because floors can aggravate hip problems. You might want to try some glucosamine treats - they're specially designed for arthritic dogs.

If he'll allow it, you can always place a warm compress on his leg joints for about 15 minutes. That will soothe the ache and loosen the muscles - just don't leave it on too long.

You're already letting him rest, but just be careful to avoid steps, jumping, and even sitting on tile floors.

Just watch him - you know him well enough to know when he's in pain.

Hope he gets better!

I would take him back to the vets and suggest they do something a bit more helpful than give painkillers - like sort the cause of the limp out. It could be all sorts of things - my dogs have developed limps because they have had:

slivers of glass in a pad
Grass seeds in a pad
An infection in a pad
A lump growing next to a pad
Arthritis

If you think arthritis is an option and at 8 it could be then glucosamine is very very helpful - it improved my lab no end...

Yes, do take him back to the vets. You need to find out exactly what is causing the limp - otherwise it is impossible to know if this is an injury that can be treated, or if it is a long-term condition.

At 8 years old it could be arthritis, which will require long term anti-inflammatories. Did your vet not give you an idea of what the problem was/prognosis?

how long has he been on the painkillers, you should notice an improvement within 2-3 days. it depends on the cause of the pain and I would expect your vet to investigations if this doesnt resolve. If he's no better tomorrow book an appointment at your vet surgery or speak to the vet for telephone advice.
You could try using glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin supplements alongside the pain killer these will help the joint and cartillage.
