Don't add black. It just makes red very dull. Add a little green. To darken any color just add it's opposite color on the color wheel. Or, add a little of the analogous color (the color next to it) on the color wheel. The analogous color of red would be red violet.
It all depends what kind of dark red you are looking for. But avoid adding black or brown. the red will stay more red and not dulled out if you add according to the color wheel.

Black has been traditionally used to darken colors (except perhaps for the impressionists). One criticism of this method is that blacks are not all made with the same pigment. Some will have undertones of blue and some might have undertones of brown. Because of this the colors don't darken as much as they get murky
One suggestion is to use a Chromatic Black because it doesn't dirty the colors.
Chromatic Black can be mixed by using:
Prussian + Alizarin + ONE of the below
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber
Raw Umber

You can add either ultramarine blue (small amount) ivory black or alizarin crimson. Alizarin crimson added to red makes a very juicy rich red color that is dark in value and quite saturated.

It depends if you simply want a darker shade or a different hue. I think dark blue actually makes a better color than black.

Black. Experiment with very small increments of black until you get the colour you desire. Too much will write off a lot of paint.
