My husband and I have to watch what we eat. He has cholesterol issues and I have to cut back on sugar and salt. Anyway, I've just recently learned to tweak a box mix to make a wonderful cake: Any flavor mix(we will say yellow for the example). To your mixing bowl, add the mix, ONE egg, One and a fourth cup water, about 4oz. applesauce(I use the little individual cups with cinnamon), about a teaspoon of cinnamon. Beat at med. speed for two minutes. I then fold in a hand full of chocolate chips(made a spice cake yesterday and put in some raisins that I soaked in water)Be sure to flour your chips so they won't sink to the bottom of the cake. Pour cake in to pan(I used a Bundt)If it's a dark pan, cook at 325 for about 40 to 46 minutes(depending on your oven)Just follow the cooking instructions on the back of the box. This makes the most wonderful, soft cake.

Try this pudding cake. It's really simple and stays really moist because of the pudding
1 Box cake mix, any flavor
1 Box instant pudding mix, same flavor as cake mix
1 1/4 Cup water
1/3 Cup oil
4 eggs.
Preheat oven to 350. Prepare a Bundt or tube pan by greasing it and then coating with flour. Put the cake mix in a bowl with the pudding mix and stir to combine. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 45-55 minutes.
If you don't have a Bundt pan you can use a regular cake pan. I've never tried it that way but it should turn out just fine. Just check it more often because the cooking time may change.
Happy Eating!

Duncan Hines makes the best box cakes period.
I will not even use the others. Try Duncan Hines German Chocolate or the Butter recipe mixes.
One way to make a cake really moist is to make an upside down cake.
Use a yellow cake mix. Put a couple tablespoons of melted butter in the pan first. Then add whatever fruit you like or applesauce. Then pour the cake mix over the fruit.
Some Upside Down cakes that I like:
Pineapple: sprinkle a couple tablespoons of brown sugar in over the butter.
Pear: Especially good with crushed pecans
Mandarin Oranges: Add a couple cans of tiny mandarin oranges. This one is good with a Spice Cake.
Cherry Pie filling: Use this with chocolate cake and serve with whipped cream for a Black Forest Cake effect.

You can substitute apple sauce for the wet ingredients in the cake. It's actually a Weight Watchers trick, but it makes the cake SUPER moist! It works best in Chocolate cake, because of the strong flavor, but you really can't taste the apple sauce.
Leave the eggs in the recipe, but substitute the oil for applesauce.

Follow the directions on the back of the box and add one box of instant pudding in a flavour that compliments the flavour of your cake. Bake at 325 degrees instead of the suggested 350.
Cake/pudding suggestions:
Chocolate cake/chocolate pudding
chocolate cake/banana pudding
gold or white cake/butterscotch pudding
white cake/lemon pudding
lemon cake/vanilla pudding
chocolate cake/pistachio pudding
Just use your imagination, there are so many combinations.

Pick up one of the cake mixes that says it has pudding in it. One recipe I enjoy making is adding ripened mashed potatos to yellow cake mix along with candied walnuts. I then make a thin cream cheese buttercream and drizzle it over the end result. Moist, tasty, and easy!

There should be directions that specify those exact questions on the side of the box. But I like to add pudding into the cake mix, it not only adds moisture but some flavor as well

also, you can use applesauce in place of the oil. You can't taste the applesauce, but it makes the cake sooo moist, and it's better for you too!
