The french Le Clerc is by far the superior tank to the M1-A1 or the Challenger 2. The french tank has the following advantages over the previous tanks. 1. It has a more powerful and longer ranged 120mm than mounted on any other tank. This gun is auto loaded and reliable this reduces the crew to three. 2. The armor can be changed out to new improved armor something that can't be done to other tanks all they can do is put armor on top of armor this adds weight to the vehicle. The french tank simply unbolts the old armor and installs new armor this also speeds up armor repair. 3. the electronics on the tank are ahead or on par with the stryker combat vehicle which has a system that tells where everyone is on the battlefield. the french version after a lot of hair pulling now works just fine and is quit reliable unlike it's American counter part which is breaking down daily in Iraq. 4. The engine is a diesel that gets far better mileage than the British or American tanks a very important factor when on the move for long distances. 5. The tank is not as tall as the other tanks making it hard to see on the battlefield and thus giving it the ability to sneak in close to the enemy before being seen. These reasons alone are why I choose this tank over the media hyped tanks already mentioned. This is not to say they aren't good tanks thet are but nopt as good as the much milagned french and there tank.

The German Leopard 2A6. To be totally balanced, these are all world-class tanks with excellent arms and armor, mobility and situational awareness, and are so close together in these respects that the skill of the crews will tell all in the event. All previous posters have made excellent points, but I must add that the new 2A6EX has the new 120mm Rheinmetall that's heavier and extends the barrel to 55 calibres, and can handle the hotter rounds for extended range. The Swedish version, called Stridsvagn 122, has been completely reworked electronically (those Swedes drop a lot of coin on their toys) and sports the best situational awareness of any tank made. It lacks the newer gun, though.

Challenger- smaller, more efficient, more adaptable and doesn't require the massive amounts of petrol and the associated vulnerable supply chain to service it.
The Arbams is a very good tank- but it is eclipsed by the more compact, more adaptable and more efficient Challenger 2 and the Leopard 2.
The Abrams uses a highly inefficient and exceptionally hot jet turbine to propel it. It only runs on gas/petrol.
It requires 8 gallons of gas/petrol just to start it and warm it up and it achieves about 1 mpg.
The huge heat discharge is a major worry too- as it is not only very unstealthy- but could be dangerous to fellow soldiers or ignitable supplies.
The Challenger 2 and the Leopard 2- both have very common commercially available Diesel engines- meaning service and maintenance is much easier- but also it can accept poorer quality fuels- and less of it. This means the supply chain is not so complex- there are less links possible to break in the supply-chain and more personal can be freed up for more important military jobs.
The Challenger 2 is also highly modular- meaning that if damaged- a part can simply be removed and replaced- putting the vehicle back into front-line effectiveness within two or three hours.
The Challenger 2 presents a lower profile for targeting as it is lower, and much more stealthy than the ABRAMS as it is not blowing out an exhaust gas higher than 100 deg C.
A better tank all-round.
The Merkova is a good tank- but it is actually a British Challenger 1 turned back to front (engine first)- with extra armour and a longer travel suspension. It is extremely large and heavy and only suitable for operations in Israel and Palestine- it cannot be transported via air.

The british challenger 2 is better and for you who say the m1 is better because of the battle proven wars in iraq, the challenger was there also, the only difference is the challenger never once got took out by the enemy, several m1 were took out.the fire control is just as good as the abrams and the challenger is now being fitted with the same gun.The main difference is the armour being tougher on the chally and the suspension.

While both those tanks have great individual attributes, the best tank currently in production is the Israeli Merkva. Granted the US and UK have been able to field test their tanks in both Gulf Wars, the Israeli's have had fifty years at perfecting their tanks in a state of near constant conflict. The current incarnation of the Merkva can easily cope with modern asymetric warfare or traditional tank versus tank combat and has proven this many times even fighting first rate soviet built machines. Unlike the US and UK who have fought tank armies consisting of antique models such as T-72's.

There are hundreds of different types of tank that suit different enviroments.
If we are speaking only of these 2 main battle tanks mentioned then I very much doubt anyone on here is expert enought to say.
However, knowing the huge development and money invested into the m1a2,knowing how well they performed in the gulf,I would feel more comfortable with this tanks support.

As Jeremy Clarkson pointed out on top gear. The Challenger is the best tank in the world. It has a rifled barrel which means the shell goes where the gun is pointing.Forget better targeting systems if the shell does'nt go where you are aiming.

The Merkava Or even better a leopard 2 or even better still a K-1ROKa4 but since none of those are on the list the newest version of the Abrams because it has much better targeting, fire control, and battlefield integration systems. including slew to Que and EPLRS system.
However If you asked me to make a choice between a Bradley or A warrior MCV I would have to go with the warrior MCV yet I served on a Bradley and loved her to death....... Shadow Stalker
