There are those who would say that all forms of sexuall immorality are sinful. This means anything other than consentual sex between husband and wife.
As I understand it, God never forbids masturbation, however Christ does tell us that to lust after another is a sin of the heart. The conclusion, therefore, would be that if one masturbates out of lust, then it is a sin, but if one masturbates for other reasons (such as to help get to sleep on a restless night or to get rid of an erection before going out on stage) then it is not a sin.
The release of hormones during orgasm (particularly in males) will temporarily lower the sex drive and help some men concentrate on work by preventing distractions of a sexual nature.
The important thing to note, is that God never forbids masturbation, and we must be very careful of condemnation of something that was not intended. Christ only condemns some of the motives of masturbation, but not the act itself.
I do NOT claim that it is or is not in general a sin. I am afraid it will be for you to decide. I only try to point out the various points of view.

Well, honestly, masturbation usually deals with our own lust. The Bible says that any man looking lustfully at a woman has committed adultery in his own heart. The act is probably harmless, however, what is happening in your mind may not be.

To quote reverend Lovejoy: "Pretty much everything is a sin. Have you ever read this thing? Technically we're not allowed to go to the bathroom"

In Islam it is reffered to as a mental-illness for the lack of better word. Not sure what Christianity and other religion has to say about it.

Are you hurting anyone else? If not, then there is nothing wrong with it. Concentrate more on helping others instead of worrying about something that does not harm.

Anything you can't do it with Jesus sitting next to you, without feeling guilty, is a sin.
