and that what you believe He commands you to do is not what an evil hacker actually forces you to do through the "friendly" God interface?
What if you're giving your souls to Satan, while you naïvely believe it is God who will get them?
Remember that God runs on Windows 98, whereas Satan is a Linux freak.

When answering questions, I tend to assume they're genuine... although the stuff about Linux doesn't make sense to me.
The relationship between God and man HAS been hacked into regularly by organised religion. Think of the things in the past that religions taught in the name of the Bible, and even with some spurious use of actual Bible verses. Extreme subjugation of women, for example.
What do we do to be as "sure" as we can that the relationship isn't being hacked into? I think it is Biblical to attend church as a group rather than being a lone believer, but I think we should also be ready to be suspicious of the corporate acts and sometimes even the doctrines of organised religion. It's when it gets big and hierarchical, that it starts to get POLITICAL.
Why do you think Jesus spent some serious effort having a go at the Pharisees and their like? Note, he was NOT going about saying "Woe" to unbelievers; it was the organised religion of the day, which had turned political and was not serving the needs of grass-roots believers.
So the answer, in my opinion, is to beware of giving too much credence to organised religion. If the teachings stray too far from what the Bible says is important...Christians shouldn't let it take over their minds. And if it's an entire religious group based on a flaky interpretation of half a scripture...we should run!

Surely God runs on a free and open software whereas Bill Gates, who has pitched himself as some kind of God, runs on Windows 98.

no longer all Christians try this. As somebody who used to persist with that philosophy, i might desire to be waiting to grant you an answer, however. i could say those proper issues as a results of fact of all of the transformations i could discover in church homes i could pass to. i could replace into so annoyed with attempting to make your concepts up what i replace into "meant" to have faith, i ultimately gave up. I grabbed my Bible and commenced examining. I do have a private relationship with Jesus, and via the Bible I found out the way He needed me to stay. as a result, i did no longer % out myself with any particular denomination of Christianity. I basically lived as a results of fact the Bible advised me I might desire to.

Your main question is clear, and the other stuff isn't so....it's just called faith. You might have faith that there isn't a God. :)
