Depends on the PD. I was issued a weapon, but chose to buy and carry another. Its all about personal preference and PD policy.

In most cases police dept issue thier officers the weapon they carry on duty. Many carry a back up weapon that belongs to the officer. There are a few deparmtents, normally very few that are very small where officers do carry thier own weapons.

When I first started, you paid for your own weapon. They wanted you to have a major brand ( at that time that meant Smith and Wesson or Colt) had to be a six shot revolver ( Yes I am that old) and be caliber .38 special or .357.magnum.Back then that could have been as cheap as $125.00 or as much as $425.00. By the time I retired, the city was supplying duty weapons.
Off-duty weapons were a personal choice as long as you could qualify with it. Most guys, myself included used .45 auto at that time for our personal weapon. Now there is Federal Law that allows retired Police/military to carry a concealed firearm in all 50 states and my choice is still a 45 auto Colt.

I don't quite understand the question. If you are talking about personal weapons, cops buy their on-duty weapons. I have an on duty and a different off duty.
