I was told that if you have a cold soar you have herpes is that true?

Cold sores are caused by the same virus as herpes. However, having a cold sore is not the same condition as having herpes. They are different strains of the parent virus, one branch causes full-blown herpes virus and another causes cold sores.
A word of caution though: If you've been having unprotected sex, then go and get tested if you have a cold sore. Syphillis also causes cold sores called cancker sores.

Cold sores come from the virus that caused chicken pox as a child, which remains dormant in the nervous system until for whatever reason it is expressed, on the face as a sore.
