Cold sores are caused by the same virus as herpes. However, having a cold sore is not the same condition as having herpes. They are different strains of the parent virus, one branch causes full-blown herpes virus and another causes cold sores.
A word of caution though: If you've been having unprotected sex, then go and get tested if you have a cold sore. Syphillis also causes cold sores called cancker sores.

yes, cold sores are caused by the herpes virus, they are known as herpes type one. herpes type two is genital herpes, same genus different strain of the virus. Cold sores come from the virus that caused chicken pox as a child, which remains dormant in the nervous system until for whatever reason it is expressed, on the face as a sore. Type one virus can be transmitted to the genitalia, there fore one should abstain from intimate contact when one has a cold sore.

Yes this is true. Cold sores are nearly always caused by herpes simplex virus type 1, or HSV-1. This is not the same strain as genital herpes, HSV-2, but HSV-2 can be spread to the mouth though direct oral contact with an open genital lesion.

Not necessarily. A herpes outbreak can look like a cold sore, but to know for sure you should see a doctor.
