The forward facing kind. You will have that one for 4-5 years, until they can just use a booster seat.

You're going to want a convertible carseat. At 11 months she's far too young to even think of facing forward. Ask again in two years. :-)
I would recommend either the Cosco Scenera at $40 or the higher weight Britaxes, the Marathon/Decathalon/Boulevard at $210-$300.
The Scenera has a 35 pound RFing limit and a shell tall enough to accommodate children to that weight. It's a pretty lousy forward facing seat with low top slots (14.5") and a low weight limit (40 pounds), but for $40 for two or three years of use, it's a great deal. You'll need another harnessed seat after that, though. Either a combination seat, or another convertible with higher slots, or a forward facing only harnessed seat.
The higher weight Britaxes have 33 pound rearfacing limit, 65 pound forward facing limit, 17" top slots, built in lockoffs (no locking clip ever needed), a rearfacing tether, wonderful padding, EPS foam, easy installation, non twist harness. The Boulevard has true side impact protection and a harness that you adjust with a knob, rather than rethreading the straps. The Boulevard and Decathalon have infant inserts. The Marathon has about a hundred covers to choose from.
Definitely keep your daughter rear facing as long as possible in her convertible seat. It's far safer than facing forward prematurely.

I am assuming you have an infant seat right now, The next step is a toddler seat, it is not a booster seat, it is a seat with a 5 point harness, that can still be used rear facing if you so desire. I found a really nice one at Wal-Mart for about 120 dollars. It can recline so my son can still sleep in the car, it reclines with one hand while he is in it and has a 5 point harness. Just read on the instructions and it will give you size and weight limits and restricitons.

A "convertible" car seat (it can be used forward and rear facing). She still needs to be facing the rear of your car until she is a year old. Once she reaches a year old AND 20 pounds she can face forward (they say that the longer she is facing the rear of your car though, the better!) She will be in the convertible seat until she weighs forty pounds, then she is ready for a booster. Most boosters can accommodate a child up too 100 pounds. Once she is four years old she doesn't have to be in a booster anymore (Michigan law), but if she is small for her age I personally would keep her in it as long as possible- even though they are a pain in the you know what!!

A convertible car seat is what is appropriate. Seeing she is 11 months old she still stays rear facing until 12 months AND 20 pounds. Then you turn the convertible car seat forward.

There are many places you can go to have your child properly fitted for a carseat. Even if you are not low income, call around to see who does this from social services, daycares, health departments, churches, police and fire departments, etc. Many specialty stores do this too. You read on the box of the carseat for weight and height restrictions, the police can tell you what the law is and remember - adjust the straps as your child grows. And very important, send in that registration that comes with the seat in case there are any recalls. If there is, they replace your seat.

The next size is called a convertable seat. It'll go rear facing until she's a year old (and the proper weight) and then you can turn it around, facing forward, and use it until the baby is much older.
Our convertable seat was purchased when our kids outgrew their infant seat at 3 months, they were too long for the infant seats, so we went right to the Britax Marathon seat. The Britax Marathon is suitable for kids up to 65 pounds! My 3 year old is still in his Marathon, but he's so TALL we'll have to get the next bigger Britax soon.
You want a seat that will go rear facing and forward facing. They sell the Britax Marathon at target and babies r us, so you can go check them out. The seat covers ARE washable, gentle cycle then let it air dry. I wash all of ours all time and they wash up great!
Best of luck to you and your growing baby!

If you are still using an infant car seat, you got lucky. They don't usually last that long. You should now probably be looking for a forward facing car seat that fits from 20-40 lb. kids. They also have this kind that will eventually convert to a booster for older kids, but they are very expensive.

We bought an evenflo triumph for our son when he was born and skipped the whole infant carrier. It's a convertible seat and has both rear and forward facing positions. It has to be used rear-facing if your child is 5-25 pounds or under one year of age. Then you flip it around and can use it forward facing from 25-40 pounds. It's a great carseat! Easy to use, sturdy and had great safety ratings on consumer reports. We bought ours at Babies-R-us for only $130.

You should get a convertable car seat that can be both rear facing adn forward facing b/c until he is at least 1 yr old he still needs to be rear facing for his protection. I'd even keep them rear facing as long as possible to ensure their safety if you were infact in a car crash.
