Well, I bought the Canon Powershot S3 IS because I could not afford a DSLR (which is what the rebel is), AND it was important that I had a very good digital camera for some family events this month. So for me, it was a compromise camera ... but a very excellent one.

If you are into photography, and want to spend the time and effort to learn all you can about your camera to get the most out of it and take the very best shots possible, then you should definitely go with the Rebel.

If you want better than average snapshots and some good quality photo's, but aren't sure how deep you want to get into photography process, then you might prefer the S3.

For me, the appeal of the S3 was the 12x zoom, video clip feature, and swivel LCD screen. If I had had the money I would have gone with a DSLR; but I am extremely pleased with the S3, and happy I got it before a DSLR, as I know I will use this camera for years to come, even after I have a DSLR.

they are two very different cameras. Both excellent for what they are, but very different.

If you are a photography enthusiast, don't mind spending the extra $$ and don't mind hauling around a medium sized camera bag, possibly with a couple of lenses- then the XTi is an excellent choice (although there are other cameras in this style that are every bit as good that you might like even more)

If you want big zoom capability in a reasonably small package. Decent image quality for most situations with good lighting and the ability to point, zoom, and press the button with little or no user input to the camera- then perhaps the S3IS is the choice for you.

It's kind of like saying- should I buy a Toyota Camry or a Chevrolet Tahoe? Both excellent vehicles... but quite different depending on your needs.

The Rebel, which I have and love, btw, is more of a professional quality digital camera than the power shoot. The Rebel is an SLR camera, which means you can chage all of the settings, like the shutter speed, and ISO. It also had a built in popup flash that automatically adjusts to put off the proper lighting. The Powershoot is just a regular old point and shoot camera. You can do so much more with the rebel than the power shoot.

The XTi is a far superior camera to the S5.... the S5 is limited to the lens on board, you are also limited in your file type to jpg, and tiff... the XTi you can shoot RAW which is far superior to jpg. the XTi you can change lenses, upgrading your options and quality of lens. The ISO I believe is similar in the S5.. which is neither here nor there... the sensor in the XTi is a better sensor.. Comparing the 2 cameras, is like comparing apples and oranges. The salesperson, I am assuming, was in Walmart or Best Buy and knows nothing about photography.
