be VERY CAREFUL! my friend had a mini pincher (cutest dog ever) but supposedly their breads develop inner ear problems. the dog would rub its head on the ground, it was in so much pain from the loud banging inside the ear canal that she had to put him to sleep, take him to the vet and have him checked regularly.

first off this breed is referred to as the Min Pin or the Miniature Pinscher, not Mini anything. I bred for over 45 years and now rescue. I have 11 of these imps. They are never a first time dog for anyone. They were bred to ferret out and kill rats and mice and vermin on German farms. They are breed stock for the American Rat Terrier. In Germany they are not a toy breed but a terrier.
They are extremely independent nature which is due to their breeding. They were bred this way to perform without human direction. They do not take to over handling. Simply put they are not arm or fashion dogs. They are a working breed that is high energy and requires a securely fenced yard to wear off energy or will damage furniture, walls, carpet etc. They are rated the 3rd worst apt dog since there is no real space to seriously exert themselves. Walks though great do not provide the necessary workout this breed needs. In addition, they are guard instinctive which only causes complaints from neighbors in apts.
They are excellent escape artist and the minute they see something that peaks their curiosity they are gone. Harness leash at all times when not in secured yard. They generally do not do well with little children who are prone to over handling and rough play. This tends to lead to nipping and biting to defend themselves.
They are also consider by most to be the worst dog to house train. Cold and damp weather is not their favorite so prefer to do their business in the house. Treat oriented and crate training is essential by providing a piece of clothing with owners scent to ensure the dog that their loved one is still around. Feeding in the crate enforces the crate is a good place. Chew toys are essential as this is a terrier therefore chewing is normal.
They do not take to training very well at all no matter what many seem to think otherwise. Just about the time you think you got a Min Pin to do what you want it to on command it refuses to do which only reinforces the fact that the only reason it did it in the first place was because it was going to anyway, meaning you saying it had nothing to do with it.
last but not least, you never get a dog before you first read all you can on the breed. you do not come to a site after you get a dog to ask about it. This is the reason so many dogs are in shelters. I suggest you go buy or check out from the library as many books as you can on the breed and spend time reading them.
and no they are not in any way related to Dobermans Pinscher. In addition this breed will live in the state of "terrible twos" until approximately 10 years of age. Simply put they will not slow down until then so expect them to get into everything they can for that time frame.

Mini pins usually bond strongly to ONE person in the family. They will tolerate others, but they usually have a strong preference for one person, and are sometimes jealous.
You really should have done some serious research before getting this dog. Min pins are cute, but can be a real challenge.

They are extremely hard to potty train! Buy yourself a crate now and be very consistent. Spaying and neutering early can help prevent marking. And yes females can mark too. Be consistent and don't overfeed and teach your new baby lots of tricks. They are happiest and stay out of trouble if they are busy learning.

Friends of mine have one of each and they get along beautifully, both were rescues. They got the Dobie first and then about a year later the Min Pin. It's much easier that way.You can get them at the same time, if you have the time for both at once. All the best;~)

High strung, yappy, hard to housebreak.
Would have been better if you found out more before you got one.
