You will need an official photo I.D. (Drivers license, non-drivers I.D.) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate, citizenship card). You may not be asked for them , but best to have them with you.

You will be asked the purpose of your trip, where you are staying, and similar questions, best to be prepared with the information, goes smoother and faster that way.

You need a photo ID, generally your driver's license will do. If you have a birth certificate, take that too. Your problem is not getting into Canada, nothing has changed here, it is re-entering the US. As of next January, you will need a passport for that.

You will need your passport to get back into the US if you are traveling from the US to Canada. I would think the passport wold be enough ID to get you into Canada as well.
