Short for NT Loader, a program loaded from the hard drive boot sector that displays the Microsoft Windows NT startup menu and helps Windows NT load.
Often a user will see the message "NTLDR is Missing" after attempting to install Windows 2000 or Windows XP, or upgrade a Windows 95-based or Windows 98-based computer to Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The message appears after the first reboot. This occurs only if Windows 95 or 98 has been installed on a drive with the FAT32 file system.

To correct the problem, the user must boot the computer with a Windows 95 or 98 Startup diskette or another bootable diskette with sys.com on it. Then, at the "A:\>" prompt, type "sys c:" and press "enter." A "System Transferred" prompt should appear and then the user must reboot the computer without the diskette.

first, make sure the error is not coming from a floppy or cd that's stuck in the drive at start up. this is a common user error.

second, you may have recovery CD that came with your computer - use if available and choose the "non-format" option" if there's is one.

if not, you need the repair CD (the original install CD) for XP/2000. ntldr is the bootloader that boots up the computer for NT (XP or 2000) and sometimes goes corrupt. but this a very bad sign, probably a bad hard drive and you should not use that hard drive without running a check on it first.

last, boot from the repair CD, it'll give you an option to repair (press R) or do a fresh install and from there it will give additional options to repair. you'll need the Administrator password so if you do not have that try blank. if that fails then do a new install in a new directory "withou"t formatting the drive so you do not lose your personal files. you'll have to reinstall all you programs later.

First see if you have a disk in the floppy drive (if you have one)

Otherwise it sounds like your O/S went missing - could be a bad hard drive.

You can try reseating the drive cables on both the drive, and the motherboard.

You might be stuck having to reload windows.
