By land, Canadians need a passport effective January 2008. By air, you have required a passport since January 23, 2007. Incidently, if you are Canadian, a passport cannot be "renewed". You have to apply for a new one. (you need to submit your old one though) Why are Canadian passports not renewable? Canadian passports are valid for five years only and a new passport must be obtained upon expiry. This is in accordance with the Canadian Passport Order (SI/81-86) which governs passport issuance.

Yea, while American trust Canadians, they don't trust the Canadian tourists. Look at Canada, it's a huge country with more borders than anyone else. It would be comically easy for a group of terrorists to land offshore way up north where no one lives, and then drive down to the US. No US/Canada border means that anyone that can sneak into Canada (which isn't that hard if you own a boat) can then walk right into the United States.

No because we have to get control of our borders and the only way to do that is to demand that everyone have proper papers and be required to show them on entry, exit and when confronted by law-enforcement personnel. We had no requirement for passports between border towns in Mexico and Canda and look what it's gotten us--12-20 million illegal immigrants, 9/11/01 and home grown terrorists residing in our country.

If you kept it to those two countries we might be able to work it out in some fashion. We don't have literally millions of people coming from Canada trying to raid our education and avoid Canadian (better) healthcare. However, the only official suggestion I've seen of this includes Mexico which is impossible due to the differential in education and other benefits meaning all their least skilled would be better off in the US or Canada.\

And I agree with the post above me that we would have to work out the fact that your rules are laxer than ours, however, we may be able to just say only true Canadian citizens would have the privilege, not residents, asylum seekers, etc.

passport should be a requirement for entering the U.S.A. all too many times in the past Canada has let people of questionable back-grounds enter and stay. perhaps one day the Canadian government will get it right and keep out the undesirables.

No, because we need to moniter who is coming in and out of our country's borders. The terrorists are looking for easy ways to sneak in, and we dont want to give them that.
