Well, I dont know about mary haveing other children, but she probably did, lookin at the time she lived in, so ye, i agree, its a bit silly to still call her "the virgin Mary" if shes

But oh well, guess it makes them happy to call her virgin mary so i dont have a huge problem with that.

She's called the vigin Mary because she was at the time Jesus was born. Joseph and Mary did have children after the birth of Jesus, but to point out the miracle that Mary never had sex with a man to give birth to Jesus she is remembered as the virgin Mary by catholics.

the question of whether Mary had children after Jesus is controversial, but the Catholic and Orthodox churches teach that she did not, so it is consistent for them to call her the Virgin Mary.

But the title Virgin Mary would still be used even if she did have children because it is a reference to Isaiah as used by Matthew: behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son. Thus the title 'Virgin' would be a reference to the role Mary played in the history of salvation.

I beg to differ with many of the answers before mine. Biblical - Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus, but had at least six other children after him:
Matthew12:47 Someone told him,"Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you"
Mark6:3 "Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James,Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?
It doesn't matter what version of the bible you read or what Christian denomination you come from, the verses are the same.

She didn't have other children. Read the Bible. She is never identified as being the mother of anyone other than Jesus, nor is anyone else identified as being her child.

EDIT: Joe D, the idea that Mary had sex and other children is relatively recent. That Mary was ever-virgin is taught not only by Catholicism, but also by Orthodoxy, as well as Protestant reformers Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Ulrich Zwingli. I believe what had been the constant teaching of Christianity for more than 1500 years, instead of some novelty.

Because she was supposedly a virgin when she gave birth to jesus.

Ofcourse, she could have cheated on Joseph then said it was god's child. *shrugs*

*EDIT*
Meg: Do you really think that Mary and Joseph never had any other children after Jesus? If I remember correctly, condoms didn't exist back then.

The Blessed Virgin Mary was a virgin when she had Jesus. She knew her husband Joseph after.

She didn't have 2 children after Jesus. If she had other children Jesus would not have told one of his disciples to take her home with him as his own mother. He did this while he was on the cross. Read the book. It is there.

Catholics believe that Mary never engaged in sex and never had other children.

However, we do have evidence that Jesus had brothers, but they would say these were half-brothers.

They also believe that Mary never died but was ascended into heaven. Which there is NO evidence to such a conclusion.

You know this isn't the only virgin birth story from way back when. Also some reptiles have virgin births.
