I know that it REALLY sucks at first, I just got over a bad one, but you need to let it run its course.
The most important thing is getting enough sleep, which means a good nights sleep and then some. Sleep if your best friend when you have a cold.
Brush your teeth and rinse with mouthwash often, it'll not only get the bad taste out of your mouth but ensure that your immune system works better by not having to deal with all the bacteria in your mouth if you dont brush your teeth.
Drink a lot of water, 8 glasses a day, and if you have lemons or limes handy you can drink the juice straight from them or have it with water. It helps the stomach, but I'd imagine it'd help with a cold because lemon is a natural antiseptic.
Don't take painkillers or weird medicines unless you really need it.
Mucinex is great when you have a lot of mucus clogging you up.
And a hot shower (steam) helps A LOT, it relaxes you in general, helps your muscles relax, and the steam helps you breathe better. Just make sure you can breathe okay and its not too hot.
Chicken soup or something hot to drink should also help too.
The best thing you can do for yourself is rest and relax and not strain yourself, because your body needs all the energy it can get to help your immune system beat this cold.

Hope it works out.

The doctor says feed your cold. Also take some Cold-Eeze to split the cold duration in half and get some nasal spray to stop the runny nose.

1. Drink lots of water (I usually drink room tempature water when I feel sick)
2. Take a multi-vitamin
3. Eat some veggies
4. stay away from junk food (candy, chips, soda, ice cream)
5. Get plenty of sleep

Also what seems to help me (I don't have any proof, but just from personal experience), is to get a lot of protein into my system.

Bed rest is recomended. Don't take asprin to lower the fever. The fever helps you fight off the bacteria and get you better.
