i also have a slow metabolism. I know exactly what you mean..except for the child thing. I try to play sports as often as possible and take walks and run/ jog. I also try to let up on some of the food I eat. Seeing as how yesterday was Easter, I'm going to have to jog plenty this week ha.

I used the Hilton Head Metabolism Diet book, by using the food guide and walking everyday I lost 60+ lbs and have keep it off for years. This diet book helped me change my eating and exercise habits by increasing my metabolism.
