It's not a black and white kind of answer. If your characters are too different, you won't be compatible. But if you are too much the same, it can lead to it's own conflicts, or even boredom.
It's all about how well you connect and interact. Your differences define who you are, just don't worry about it ahead of time. If it's a problem, it'll be obvious pretty quick.

My mom said it best to me the other day. She said she loves it when two people come together and they both become better people as a result of it. : ) There needs to be some common ground, even if it is just the passion you have for each other.
