I have a Dell Dimension 4300. Recently I had to reformat my hard drive because the computer became unusable. So I reformatted and reinstalled all the Dell system stuff (graphics card, sound card, etc.) Then I needed to install Word, Streets and Trips, Encarta, etc. (which were all included with the computer when I bought it.) I put in the CD for word and it asks me for the product key and tells me to check on the jewel case. Now, none of the mentioned software (Word, Encarta, etc.) came with jewel cases. They were all in little white CD envelopes. So I looked everywhere for the CD key and I can't find it. My suspicion is that I never had a key to begin with. Where should I look for it, and if I can't find it, what should I do after that?

By the way, I have Windows ME and I don't think a key finder would work because the hard drive was reformatted and therefore the key is not stored anywhere on the computer. Or is it?

It had a product key - trust me. Hopefully we can find it.

You can find the Product key for WindowsXP with any of these:

Replace Lost Office Product Keys
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011508341033.aspx

To obtain a new product key for your Office program in the United States, call 1-800-936-5700 and speak to a Microsoft customer service representative. Outside of the United States, call the number that appears in the activation wizard.
When you call Microsoft for a new Office product key, have the following items available for the customer service representative:
The product CD-ROM
The computer on which you want to install Office
The readable parts of your original product key (if available)
The ProductID information in the registry

I hope you can find your answer here. When you do, I suggest you take a screen shot when the key is shown :
- with the display of the key number before you, press print screen (this puts a copy of the screen in the clipboard)
or, if you are not able to paste it into a blank document, try to File, Print.

Another thought - if it came "bundled" with your computer, you can try contacting Dell support.

Sometimes you might need to retrieve the CD Key used to install Windows in order to find out if it's legally purchased, or just for safe keeping. I usually find myself in that position whenever I'm at a client's location, trying to see if the copy of Windows 2000 he's using is indeed legally registered.

Luckily for us, some programs exist that can help you do just that - retrieve license information from the registry, and allow you to copy it for safekeeping or for documentation purposes.

Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder

This is a small freeware utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install windows from your registry. It has the options to copy the key to clipboard, save it to a text file, or print it for safekeeping. It works on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Office 97, and Office XP.

This version (v1.41) is a quick update to make it work with Windows Server 2003.

No legal way, sorry, 2000's licensing didn't work for more than one PC, just a PC and a laptop. Calling them won't work.
