I just weighed 5 different cans and got the following results:
Mt. Dew = 14.39 grams,
Coke = 13.91 grams,
Pepsi = 13.53 grams,
Nestea = 13.86 grams, and
Generic cola = 13.80 grams.
From this data, the average can weighs 13.90 grams (or 0.031 pounds) (or 0.49 ounces as stated above) and it would take 32.64 cans to make one pound.
(Yes, the amount of aluminum per can is continuing to drop – go metallurgists!)
"a pound is about how much 34 aluminum beverage cans weigh" from http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/energyfacts/saving/recycling/solidwaste/metals.html

In 1974 it took 23 aluminum cans to make one pound. Today, aluminum beverage cans are lighter and 33 produce a pound. A single aluminum can weighs about one half of an ounce.

Right, about a "case" worth: 24 to 25. BUT, cans have been getting a little lighter in the past few years, so now it might take 26 or 27.
