It takes many years and even life times of intense practice. Like His Holiness Sakya Trizin once said in a teaching. Americans think one can become enlighten in a matter of minutes but it takes life times of intense training.
One doesn't "find" enlightenment one works towards developing it. Find a qualified teacher, be it a Buddhist lama or a Hindu Yogi or what ever qualified teacher of what ever faith you choose but it all is up to you to develop on a daily basis. Two good introduction books are Gently Whispered by Kalu Rinpoche IBSN 0-88268-153-2 and The Four Noble Truths by Geshe Tashi Tsering. this is the Foundation of Buddhist Thought Volume I ISBN 0-86171-270-6. I was a student of His Eminence Kalu Rinpoche in his last life time. He is now reincarnated but I have not yet met him in this new life but my teacher Rinpoche Lama Lodro who teaches in San Francisco has.

Realize that enlightenment is only a word in the english language. It has a different meaning for every person. Really... it has NO meaning.
One person might say it means to "Align your chakras"
Another might say that it is understanding the universe.
Another might say that it is simply doing the things you need to do in life.
It has NO meaning.
