Well. Cod liver oil tablets can indeed be given to dogs to help with arthritis - but please check with a vet for the dosage for dogs, as it will be different than for humans, and obviously a human pharmacist will not know this. Too much of anything can be bad.

All our dogs had cod liver oil, but the liquid, not the tablets. It had no side effects, not that I know of anyway and none that were evident. The idea behind it with older dogs is to keep their joints supple. We started ours off quite young on them, in comparison. Ours were GSDs and are notorious for having probs with their back legs, all of the dogs given cod liver oil died of other things and suffered NO problems with their back legs or joints, don't know if it's just a coincidence - they may have suffered if it wasn't for the cod liver oil, they may not but we put it down to that. It is worth a try. We just used to mix it in with their food every day. Gives them a lovely shiny coat too but watch out for the fishy breath.

My 9 year old Golden recently succomed to liver cancer. I was reading an article where they were giving dogs with cancer 1000mg of fish oil a day. I also know of studies where they gave asthmatics 4 times that amount and it prefented them from developing the inflamation process assciated with astma. Research it out, but I am sure the benefits will out weight the risk of giving her cod liver oil. As long as you don't mind the fish breath.

Fish oil is a great anti-inflammatory. However, I believe salmon oil is better than cod liver oil. Even the generic, fish oil products are better.
I would also have her on a suppliment with Glucosamine, I use Glyco-flex for my 11 yr old Rottie

No long term side effects at all. Cod liver oil is a good supplement of essential fatty acids which are very useful.
Other supplements, recommended by vets, may be even more efficient, especially for joint pain. You can check out:

Good luck

They will not harm her at all....... pet stores sell cod liver oil especially for this kind of thing. Glucosamine supplements help as well, but there is glucosamine in most senior dogs diets anyway. If shes not, she should be on senior food. a good quality, like wainwrights. Its exactly the same as james wellbeloved but cheaper and you can get it from pets at home stores. it comes in wet and dry, and its all natural

I would personally not want to take MORE than the RECOMMENDED dosage of any medication, prescribed or other-the-counter. That's why they call it the RECOMMENDED DOSAGE which means they have done studies on this particular drug and dosage and the side-effects it may cause. That's also why they have recommended a dosage. If you take more than that dosage for ANY drug, it's like just asking for trouble. Most people don't consider over-the counter medications as "drugs", but they are just as much a drug as one that the doctor prescribes and that is usually what gets people into trouble.
