Chicken or turkey is better, less fat. I would not feed them as a steady diet. But hey if you're out camping and you're eating one, why not? On occasion...
You can actually make a great training treat from hot dogs - dogs go nuts for these -
Split a hot dog lengthwise into quarters, then cut crosswise into 1/4-3/8" peices. Place the pieces on a layer of paper towels and microwave them; times will vary but usually 1 1/2 - 2 minutes. The little bits will first puff up then turn brown and hard, just watch them closely.
Once nuked I put them in ziplock sandwich bags and freeze all but one bag. These make great tasty little treats, excellent for potty training or obedience training, not real big but I guess they pack a punch of flavor.

I use small pieces of hot dog as a training reward, but they wouldn't be good as a meal. There's not enough nutritional value in them.
As far as chicken or beef... I usually use chicken because it has a less fat (and doesn't get the little baggie all greasy).

My vet recommended, that I don't give my dog any "table food", other than the ones that are specially formulated for pets. The reason he said is that sometimes human food has to many sodium and other things that pets can't normally digest. An occasionally treat is OK, in moderation, but if you what a healthy pet you should keep him with his pet food.
Given them to many human food can also lead to obesity!

The stuff in hot dogs probably isn't much different than the stuff they put in dog food.

Hot dogs aren't good for dogs, regular dog food is better. It wouldn't kill him to eat it but he might get diheria. It is better just to not feed him any table scraps.

Not really. They're not even that good for humans, and they will certainly end up making your dog fat!
If I was going to give my dog hotdogs - and I wouldn't - I wouldn't give a large dog more than one every three weeks, or a small one a half one every three weeks.
Better just to get your dog proper treats intended for dogs. The rubbish they put in hot dogs could give your dog the serious runs.

The odd treat is OK but remember that hot dogs are full of fat and additives and aren't any better for our dogs than they are for us!

Both are ok. Beef is better because it's much healthier for a dog's diet.
