It really depends a lot on who you are. Some people have a natural ability to learn languages, while for others it's more difficult. However, it is possible for everyone. If you study hard, you should be able to communicate fairly well in two years. If you are able to spend time in a Spanish speaking country, that will definitely speed up the process. Whatever you do, it's well worth the effort to learn Spanish. Good luck!

That depends on how often a week you will go there and how easy you can learn...
I began taking spanish lessons twice a week last summer. And I can talk and understand a lot now. But I won't be able to understand EVERYTHING for a long time!!!
I guess it will take another year (or even more) until I really can talk spanish....
So I think you will need at least 2 years

Hello!
It depends on the method you follow. Anyway, it takes about 2,000 hours to really master Spanish. But as I've told you, it depends on the quality of the method.
A book that helped me a lot was Spanish in 1500 Words vocabulary builder. You will have to make some memorization (it's absolutely necesary to learn a language), but it's the most efective way to build an effective Spanish vocabulary with minimum effort.
The author of the book analyzed hundreds of texts and thousands of hours of conversation and the conclusion was awesome: 90% of day-to-day Spanish uses only 1500 words. This book has them all and it's specifically designed for english speakers studying spanish.
You can find more information & buy it here: http://www.lulu.com/content/752538
Hope it helps. Good luck!

Hi the best way to learn Spanish is actually talk someone who actually speaks it. There are a lot of materials online where you can learn Spanish free such as conjuguemos.com and sometimes it’s really down to quality of teaching.
You can get free 6 day Spanish course here http://fastlearnspanish.blogspot.com/

It depends how many hours of the day you put into it an if you have some knowledge or not. It also helps if you have someone to talk to in Spanish. Try also listen to TV programs that are in Spanish it helps you to listen to the pronunciation of the words. Check your local library for books in Spanish!

i married a guy that is spanish, and his family are the ones that taught me spanish. I married him 11 yrs ago, and I am still learning. The reason is that a lot of people use slang, and then there are the proper way to say things.

To just get basic conversational Spanish, I took a 6 month crash coarse. Then as the other 2 poster before me said: ' get a Spanish speaking friend'.
Or as my teacher told me "go live in a Spanish speaking country". If you don't continue to use it, you will louse it.

I actually started beginner courses in 3rd year university and followed up with two successive language/family stays in Spain (through EF - summer programs). It was easier for me to pick it up though because I also speak two other romance languages (French & Romanian)...but as others suggested, finding someone to speak Spanish with (in my city there is a Spanish cultural centre that is open to spanish and non-spanish speaking people) or even better, immersing yourself in the language (i.e. going abroad) is the most effective way to really boost your language acquisition...how long it takes to feel comfortable in the language depends entirely on you and the resources available to you...but anticipate a few years at least!

The years depends on your interest of learning the language is no simple because of all the grammatical rules but is worthy. An average person should learn in two years or less this include daily practice and skeaking and also writing. But look the bride side maybe you could learn in less time you have new gates as yahoo answers! ;)
