I think you need a police report if its in an accident. The insurance company wants to see what happend and the police report can tell that. I would call and ask them what they want. I am sure they will cover it without a report but it might be more of a hassel.

If you have damaged more than your vehicle, it is a good idea to report it to the police so you are not charged with a hit and run. Also if you hit an animal prior to going in the ditch, you would want verification so it would be considered a comprehensive claim rather than a collision claim.

For the collision coverage...no. Just call your insurance company.
There may be one rare case where it is necessary to call the police: If you have uninusred motorists coverage, if an unidentified vehicle forced you off the road, if you or a passenger were injured. These are requirements for a valid uninusured motorist claim when the other vehicle takes off.

This will depend on your insurance company.

You will have to call them and ask them what they require.

If they say they need a police report the you will have to call the police.

WARNING:****You may also end up with a ticket for reckless driving. ****

I wish you the best of luck on this.

You would be required to contact the police because of the amount of damage involved. If you call a wrecker, depending on the time of day, a law enforcement officer, may be right behind him. This happened to my son, the cop wanted to know if he had been drinking, and he had to perform to show he wasn't drinking. My son called the wrecker, but the cop showed and gave him a ticket, for falling asleep at the wheel. They considered it a negligent act, and cost alot.
