Hardwood floors are more elegant and adds value to your home. Some disadvantages would be scratching, denting, and staining, all of which can be minimized or avoided given proper care and attention. Worst case, you can just re-sand and re-finish. Excessive exposure to moisture will cause it to warp.

Ceramic tiles are sturdier, harder to scratch, but will break. Grouts accumulate bacteria and germs you do not want in your home. Moisture conditions not a problem.

It would be good to not to use just one kind for the entirety of your home, but instead both. Each has it's strong points and weaknesses---use this to work to your advantage. Have hardwood floors in the rooms you want to have a cozy and elegant feel, ceramic tiles in wet areas such as bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Hardwood is easier to clean than tile is. Tile has a lot more little grooves and pits where dirt settles in to and needs occasional scrubbing instead of just mopping. You dont have this problem with hardwood. Tiles can be more durable in high traffic areas, does not show ware as much as hardwood but, the corners of the tile can lift if it is laminate. And if it is not laminate tile then they can crack or break if stuff is dropped on them. I also think that hardwood is easier to lay to compared to tiles. Tiles give a colder feeling to a room where as wood is a more warmer feeling. Tiles are good for kitchens, laundry rooms and bathrooms. Hardwood is good for halls, dinning rooms, sitting rooms, bedrooms.

Hope this gives you some different perspectives on the two. Good luck!

Hardwood is the way to go!!! It will last almost forever and it holds heat, unlike tiles which you will have to replace at some time.Harwood is so basic of a color that all your furnishings and stuff will match too.

They are both very popular but I prefer hardwood. It is easy to clean and adds a rich warm look to the rooms.

Avoid wooden floors, they're bloody splintery.
I had one in my old house. Never again.
