According to this information, in a scale of 1 to 10, it would be practically a 9! Amazing, isn't it? (similarity with Italian is 82%, while French is only 75%)

Spanish and Portuguese are very similar. They use a lot of the same words. However, sometimes the words have different meanings. For example, mas. In Spanish it means more, in Portuguese it means but.

Many Spanish speaker say they can understand quite a bit of Portuguese and vis a verse. I would not take accent into consideration in this case (as a previous poster mentioned) only because the Spanish accent is so varied, from Mexico to Spain or Chile, even a fluent Spanish speaker can have a hard time understanding the Spanish from a different country. The Portuguese language has two main accents, one from the north and one from the south so it does not vary as much.

On a scale of 1-10, I would say that the similarities of Portuguese and Spanish are an 8.

From 1 to 10 ? 5 to 8, depending on the speaker. I mean depends on how much slang and regionalisms are in the speaker's speech. The languages are very closer for Portuguese and Spaniard speakers than for Brazilian and , say, Argentinian speakers .
The grammar of both languages are basically the same and many words are the same or slightly different. Let's say, the "core" of both are more similar than the spoken languages.

By the way I am Brazilian. I have no much difficult in reading Spanish (to me its a little more difficult in hearing but I can go through). In my time Brazilian Portuguese are closer to continental Portuguese than today they are. So nowadays it's a little more difficult to people understand Spanish. Also depends from where you live in Brazil - in border States they find it easier.
Lately I spoke with an Spaniard from Galliza - on Brazilian YA. Galliza is in the borderline from Portugal and Spain. There they speak Gallego as well Spanish. I had no problem, it's even very closer to Portuguese. I'd say it's similarity ranges form 8 to 9 .

They are deceivingly similar - I am a native Spanish speaker and when I have watched Brazilian movies, and tried not to read the subtitles, I understand very, very little.

I am spanish speaking and I dont know a word of Portuguese but I have notice that if I a heard somebody speaking in portuguese I understand 80% of what they are saying. A lot of words are pronounced alomost the same.

8...mas depende do sotaque. Tem espanhol que não se entende nada, e tem português que não se entende nada. O fato é que um brasileiro na Argentina, ou um argentino no Brasil, não vai ter grandes difuculdades em se comunicar. Para quem tem como língua mãe uma língua latina, aprender outra língua latina é muito mais fácil do que aprender inglês, por exemplo.

Even if they are different languages, they are both Romance languages and share the same roots, both for words and structure. Other languages in the same "family" are Italian and French.

i would say around 7, because my two favorite athletes are protuguese and spanish, ( rafael nadal is from spain and speaks spanish, and cristiano ronaldo is from portugal and speaks protuguese) i have heard both of the languages many times and they are similar, but different as well.
