My husband's family is moving in with us next week. Three of them. We have two cats that we love and adore. Unfortunately, their bedroom will now be my mother-in-law's bedroom. They live in the house, they are not outdoor cats and that will not change. The house is theirs to roam and sleep and whatever. The only problem is that at night we shut the door to their room (it's a big room) with their water and litter box because they like to run around and play at night. They jump all over us and we can't sleep. So we keep them in their room at night. But now, they don;t have a room. I can't let them roam the house and shut the bedroom doors because they will meow and scratch all night for someone let them in. I was thinking about opening the door between the laundry room and garage and letting them sleep in there. It will be warm in the laundry room where we can keep their food and beds, but they can run in the garage. Would this be a good idea? I want to make sure they are ok at night.

Good thing is that we have a brand new house and there is nothing in the garage but a few papasan chairs, boxes with books and DVDs and clothes, a weight bench and a kicking bag. No chemicals, no motor oil, no antifreeze. Nothing harmful.

You could do that yes.

BUT - be very careful about what substances are hanging around your garage! Basically you want to make ALL bottles of stuff completely inaccessible to the cats, i.e lock them away or remove them from the garage all together. I'm talking about anti-freeze mainly - very attractive to cats because of its sweet smell, and very toxic. Motor oil is another one to keep out of their way.

So yes do it, but be so very careful!

is the garage door always closed? if it is hot where you live, the cat can overheat. why does the cat have to sleep in the garage? is she ever allowed inside? i hope the cat is allowed to roam the neighborhood, at least. you shuold tell your mom that you think the cat belongs indoors, it is not fair to keep her locked up in the garage. she needs human contact and love, isolation is very bad for the mental health of animals. good luck talking with your mom.

they would be fine in the garage/laundry room. just make sure there is no chemicals or toxic things they can spill or get into and make sure the washing machine lid is shut.

i think that would be totally fine~i bet they would have a lot of fun~but maybe you should let them play in that area or even lock them up in that area for a while to see how they would react and to get them used to it so for a slight chance they may get scared they will already be used to the area~
and good luck with your in-laws!!

It should be fine but watch out for chemicals such as antifreeze, oil, paint, rat poison. very small amounts of this stuff can be lethal.

that sounds like a good plan. just make sure you remember to keep chemicals out of there.

I think that it is wonderful that you are thinking about their well being. not every owner would think ahead like you are doing.
It shows that you care about your cats.
